Gary and Joseph... sittin' in a tree.... K I S S I N G

I don't know why (well, OK, I *do* know why) this makes me giggle, but it does.
The Young Conservatives of Texas- University of Texas Chapter has decided on a very special nativity scene to display this year. They're calling it their "ACLU Nativity Scene".

OMG. That is AWESOME! (h/t to John)

Jam On It!

I know you've all seen this already at some point... but I watched it again today and it put a smile on my face. I figured it would make ya'll smile too.

Yes, Virginia.... there really is a Santa Claus.

I've always said that giving is so much better than receiving.... but Larry Stewart takes it to a whole new level. Meet the Secret Santa.

We could all learn from Mr. Stewart- about the joy of giving, and the embarassment and heartache of having to ask. You'll be missed, Mr. Stewart. I hope that others take up your cause and spread goodwill around the country like you have in the Midwest. I'll be praying for that miracle that saves you, so that you can see your legacy grow and thrive.

Fox in the Chicken Coup

Bush has picked Eric Keroack, OB/GYN, to head the federal Office of Population Affairs. So what, right?
Well, it's a big deal when you consider the following:
Dr. Keroack is the medical director of A Woman's Concern, a Christian non-profit organization that opposes premarital sex, contraception AND abortion to lead the office that oversees federally funded teen pregnancy, family planning and abstinence programs.

FOX IN THE CHICKEN COUP.

A Woman's Concern works to "help women escape the temptation and violence of abortion", which is honorable for a Christian organization, but is that what we want our federal government doing? Abortion is legal, and birth control sure as hell is legal in the United States, so I really question the move to appoint Keroack.

GahDammit

AnySoldier has now lost it's 31st contact. 21 year old LCpL Mike Scholl is now patrolling the streets of heaven. He looks so happy and proud in his Dress Blues. I hope he died knowing he made a difference in the world.

31 random men and women who signed up at anysoldier are now gone from this world.
31 families are missing a loved one.
31 units are still mourning the loss of their brothers- and sisters too.
31 out of the 3,000-plus dead in Iraq and Afghanistan were anysoldier contacts.
The oldest was 51; the youngest, 18. Two have been women, including the 2nd-youngest, SPC Carrie French, who was only 19. (you may recognize her name for other reasons- Fred Phelps and his so-called church staged a protest at her funeral, one of the first that made national headlines)

I remember the first one lost at anysoldier. CW2 Travis Grogan was 31 years old when his helicopter crashed in Bamian, AFG, almost exactly 2 years ago. I remember sending Marty an email, thanking him for reporting the loss. I remember how emotional it was to lose an anysoldier contact- even one I'd never had contact with.

GahDammit.
It wasn't easy two years ago, and it isn't any easier today. But I'm just as supportive, and just as proud of them now as I was back then.

Rest in peace, Mike. Your fellow Marines will carry on the fight for now.

My First Trip to NYC

I was a sophmore in high school, and a proud member of the drumline for Centerville High School's marching band. We were marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade- and even won the rights to the spot of the LEAD BAND! Yeah. It was a big deal back then. Still is, actually.

We stayed through the weekend, shopping downtown and even taking in a Broadway show, "Dreamgirls". I remember sitting in that audience, enthralled by the experience, listening to Jennifer Holiday, Cleavant Derricks, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine(who is also in the new movie version!), Ben Harney (who plays Curtis, the band manager and Effie's boyfriend- and the subject of the song I quote below) and Obba Babatunde belt out the most amazing songs. I swear, when I close my eyes, I can STILL hear Holiday (as Effie) singing, "I'm tellin' you... You're the BEST MAN I'll EVER know... No, no, no, no way I'm livin' without you". Oh man. CHILLS, I tell ya. CHILLS.

While browsing through FoxNews today, I found out that "Dreamgirls" has been made into a movie- and it does NOT disappoint, according to the critics. Although the storyline closely follows the true-life storyline of The Supremes, the playwright denies basing his musical upon the group. Call me a theater geek- that's ok. I cannot WAIT to see this movie.
CANNOT WAIT!
I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!

It'll be like walking off that bus in New York City as a 14 year old girl again, with my drumsticks in hand and Broadway dreams in my head. I just hope the opening scene isn't the first thing I saw in New York- a totally decked out drunken transvestite. Heh.

Hero. Defined.

Sgt. John Eade

I know... it's an old post on Mudville, but due to the recent new blog set up by the author of that story, I've just now read it. Jules Crittenden is no longer just a newspaper reporter... he's moved into the blogging world so that he can tell the REST of the story! I'm VERY excited about this.

We Are Marshall!

The front page of the Cincinnati Enquirer today features a picture of hottie Matthew McConaughey (that's for you, Kris. WOOT!) in a scene from his new movie, "We Are Marshall". I don't know about you, but I had no idea who "Marshall" was, or why it was worthy of a movie before today.

On Novemeber 14, 1970, I was exactly 3 years and 2 months old. I had a baby brother who was exactly 2 months old. And on that day, nearly 40 *cough* years ago, 75 people were killed in a plane crash in Huntington, WV. It was a flight charted by Marshall University to transport their football team, the coaches and trainer, and 33 boosters from East Carolina University back to Marshall. All were killed in the crash.

The entire football team, except one, was killed. Every coach, except one, was killed. The surviving player was back at Marshall, sidelined due to an injury. The surviving coach was driving back to Marshall, planning on making some recruiting stops along the way. Three of the players were from Cincinnati's Moeller High School, one of the top high school football teams in the nation. Another Cincinnati connection to the Marshall tragedy: The next year, Marshall won it's first home game... against Cincinnati's Xavier University. That game, of course, is the feel-good moment of the movie.

I, for one, cannot wait to see this movie- with plenty of Kleenex in hand. Triumph over tragedy. It's a storyline that never grows old... but it's made that much more special when it's a true story and not just fiction.

How is this possible????!!!!!

The Bengals were up 28-7 at the half yesterday.... AND ENDED UP LOSING 49-41. WTF is that about?

Oh, and did you happen to see the glorious 108 yard touchdown run made by the Bears yesterday? PRICELESS.

yeah. if only i was a Bears' fan instead of a Bengals' fan, i'd be really happy right now.

*grump*

Happy Veteran's Day!

It is, and always will be, my firm belief that we owe our very existence to our military veterans, and that each and every one of them deserves a free holiday on Veteran's Day every year. We say "thank you", and you soldiers just shrug it off with a timid "you're welcome". You're not in the military for the money, or the glory, or the really kewl uniform. You joined out of a sense of duty to our nation and the world... and for that, I salute you.

In trying to decide what to post today, I came across a couple of video's I thought you'd like to see.

From SK, I give you: Hangin' out with the Boys

For Da Grunt and his JarHead Dad.... It's All Over But The Shoutin!

And, from our President, George W. Bush:
....To protect the Nation they love, our veterans stepped forward when America needed them most. In conflicts around the world, their sacrifice and resolve helped destroy the enemies of freedom and saved millions from oppression. In answering history's call with honor, decency, and resolve, our veterans have shown the power of liberty and earned the respect and admiration of a grateful Nation.

All of America's veterans have placed our Nation's security before their own lives, creating a debt that we can never fully repay. Our veterans represent the best of America, and they deserve the best America can give them.

As we recall the service of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, we are reminded that the defense of freedom comes with great loss and sacrifice. This Veterans Day, we give thanks to those who have served freedom's cause; we salute the members of our Armed Forces who are confronting our adversaries abroad; and we honor the men and women who left America's shores but did not live to be thanked as veterans. They will always be remembered by our country...

"creating a debt that we can never fully repay." Isn't that the God's honest truth? How do you adequately repay those who have sacrificed so much in service of their country? I don't think it's possible, but I can tell you where to start: Start by supporting the soldier AND the mission, because without support of the mission itself, their sacrifices are diminished. I don't want the thousands who have been injured or killed in this war to live their lives thinking that America gave up on them.

Support our troops.
Support their mission.
And, no matter what else you do today... Say THANK YOU to EVERY veteran you know. Every.Last.One.
It's the least you can do. Of course if you want to do more, what better way to show it than to contribute to Valour-IT. It's the last day of the competition, but it is not the last day in rehab for our wounded warriors.
Please help us help those who have sacrificed their bodies and livelihood for our freedoms.
Thank you.

US Marine Corps School of Infantry

US Marine Corps School of Infantry

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, USMC!

Many thanks to Melissa for reminding us all WHY WE LOVE OUR MARINES!!

The United States Marine

MARINES come in all shapes, shades, weights, sizes, & states of sobriety, misery, & confusion. He is sly as a fox, has the nerve of a dope addict, the stories of an old sailor, the sincerity of a politician, & the subtly of Mt. Saint Helen. He's extremely irresistible, totally irrational & completely indestructible.

A Marine is a Marine all his life. He is a magical creature. You can kick him out of your house but not out of your heart. You can take him off your mailing list but not off your mind. Marines are found everywhere... in love...in battle... in lust... in trouble...in debt... in bars & behind them. No one can write so seldom and yet think so much of you. No one else can get so much enjoyment out of a letter or clean clothes or a 6 pack.

A Marine is a genius with a deck of cards. A millionaire without a cent and brave without a grain of sense. He is the PROTECTOR OF AMERICA, with the latest copy of Playboy in his back pocket. When he wants something it's usually 30 days leave, music that hurts the ears, a five dollar bill...or A WOMAN HE CAN COUNT ON.

Girls love them, mothers tolerate them, fathers brag about them, the government pays them, the police watch out for them & somehow they all work together. You can beat their bodies but not their minds.

You can tame their hearts but not their souls. He likes girls, females, women, ladies. He dislikes small checks, working weekends, answering letters, eating chow, waking up, maintaining a uniform, & the day before payday. You may as well give in. He is your long distance lover... He is your steel eyed, warm smiling, blank minded, hyperactive, over reacting, curious, passive, talented spontaneous, physically fit, good for nothing bundle of worry.....

And will always be there for you regardless of how long its been since you've last talked.

(I just hope our new Democratic leaders remember that Marines are our FRIENDS, and deserve our respect and support, and not the "I support our troops but not the war" kind of support.)

Sumthing lite-harted and stoopid

I was looking at my SiteMeter this morning, and got a chuckle (as usual) over how some people have arrived here.

Fer instance...
I'm #1 AND #2 on Google for "words to say when you bury a hamster"!
(How about "We gather here today in the backyard to honor the life of Fluffy... who's not-so-fluffy anymore, and starting to stink"??)

"a group of frogs were traveling"
(I have *no* idea how that happened)

" "my boys" "them condoms" "
(MY boys are 6 and 9... they'd better not be finding uses for "them condoms" yet!)

"What did the sign on the whorehouse door say?"
(ok... I'll bite. What *did* the sign on the whorehouse door say? Beat it! We're closed! ba-dum-bump)

"clogged toilet pics"
(I've heard of weird fetishes before, but DAMN..!!)

"does Vin Diesel have a sister"
(No offense, but... you must be gay)

"george washington asparagus pee"
(I have NO idea what GW and asparagus pee have in common... NO idea)

"how to take care of a toy puddle"
(Water it daily. Do not leave in direct sunlight. I hope that helps...)

And in light of yesterday's election, I thought you might enjoy this short quiz:
You Are 36% Politically Radical

You've got a few unusual political ideas, but overall you're a pretty mainstream person. Chances are that you're turned off by both the radical right and looney left.

F-itty F F

Sherrod Brown didn't let the Dem's down, and neither did the majority of Democratic candidates across the country. Hell, Murtha won by a frikkin' landslide, and I'm willing to bet that even John Kerry would have won last night if he had been up for re-election.

In a swing state like Ohio, this election was a complete and utter disaster for the Republicans. We elected a Democratic governor for the first time in 20 years. Across the state, Dem's beat their Republican opponents. Even here in Ohio's Deep South, Mike DeWine lost to Sherrod Brown, a loss that just boggles my mind. Southern Ohio has ALWAYS been a Republican-dominated area- until now.

WHY!?!!????!

It's not just the war. It's not just the recent national scandals. It's not just gas prices or energy bills. It's not just fiscal responsibility. It's not just one or two glaring issues.. it's a combination.

We wanted a conservative government geared toward change... and the Dem's capitalized on that. They took advantage of the nation's emotions. October was a terrible month in terms of human life lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. The media went out of their way to highlight each and every death. They focused on the anti-war crowd, and the emotions associated with the loss of our soldiers.

Instead of focusing on anything good that has happened in Iraq or Afghanistan, all we hear is death, destruction, corruption, murder, rape, prisoner abuse, and a lack of equipment. The voices of our boots-on-ground soldiers and the common citizen in Iraq and Afghanistan is never heard- no mention of the electricity or water that's been restored, the schools which have been built, the hospitals which have been refurbished, the vast amount of the country under local control instead of US control, the number of lives which have been saved due to body armor and vehicle reinforcement. The American public is being sheltered from the GOOD stories coming out of the Middle East for some reason. I wish I knew why.

The Republicans lost control of the government yesterday. I can only hope that the Democrats who were elected are truly the right-leaning conservatives they claim to be. The only shining light I could see last night was the fact that many of the Democrats who won are NOT far-left liberal wingnuts- they seem to be more Centrist. That, my friends, is a good thing. I'm hoping that those elected last night will bring about positive changes.

If I could have created a perfect candidate, he or she would have wanted to end illegal immigration, improved our national image, created a true winning strategy in the Middle East, reduced gasoline costs by eliminating the tax breaks given to the big oil companies, maintained our current federal income tax breaks for individuals, created civil unions, banned partial-birth abortions, banned smoking in all public places, improved medical and life insurance coverage for our military, reduced medical malpractice lawsuits (which will reduce malpractice insurance costs, which will reduce the amount doctors and hospitals have to charge, which will reduce the cost of insurance), provided more public funding for higher education (like California state schools), outlawed protesting at funerals, and had a viable plan for balancing the budget.

I know. Pipe dream. But that's what I wanted from my candidates yesterday. None of it is beyond possibility, but it was impossible to find a candidate that met all of my criteria. I think that's what the rest of America saw too, and being dissatisfied with the status quo, voted for the opponent just for change. I just hope they voted for the right change.

Hooray! Hooray! It's Election Day!

Get out and ROCK THE VOTE, Republicans!
I voted already, so I thought I'd give the rest of you some encouragement. Election day quotes!

A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but won't cross the street to vote in a national election. ~Bill Vaughan
(Come on America! Prove Bill wrong on this one)

************
Hell, I never vote for anybody, I always vote against. ~W.C. Fields
(Well, I have to say I've done that too... but the bottom line is that I voted!)

************
Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote. ~George Jean Nathan
(YES! EXACTLY why we should all bust our collective asses to make sure we get to the polls today!)

************
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong. ~Richard Armour
(LOVE this one. So very true.)

************

I don't care how you do it, as long as you get out and make yourself heard today. There are people all over the world DYING to exercise their right to vote- all you have to do is go to the polling place and vote.
(and while you're there... remember to VOTE REPUBLICAN!)

Things catching my eye

1. All is right in the world again- I have my babies back home! It's amazing how quiet a house can be without children in it. Even more amazing is how you forget about the yelling and fighting, and how you wish they'd be quiet and just play nice when there truly isn't any yelling, fighting or playing to be heard. Quiet isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

2. Saddam's gonna hang. Damn. WHAT A SHAME. I was hoping for a stoning- something cruel and vicious, and something that the many people he hurt over the years could participate in.
I know... that sounds evil and malicious and very un-christianlike... but he really deserves it.

3. I'm car shopping. Any suggestions? I've driven the Jeep Liberty and the Jeep Compass, and am also considering the Toyota Rav4, Camry and the Dodge Caliber. I didn't like the Liberty- steering was way too tight, seats were rigid, brakes were soft, the high center-of-gravity made it seem wobbly in corners, and it was noisy. The Compass was nice- comfortable seats, steering wasn't as tight, wasn't as noisy but still has 4wd on the fly just like the Liberty. Any other suggestions??
I'm looking for a car with good handling in the snow and ice (lots of curvy hills around my house), good gas mileage, and a comfortable ride for both me and the boys.

4. The USS Intrepid Museum is headed for dry dock today. During the next 18 months, Pier 86 will get a complete overhaul and so will the ship. I wish I could see her being moved- what a sight... a 27,000 ton ship, resting in 17 feet of mud, being pulled out by a 6,700hp tug across the river to dry dock in New Jersey. I wonder if BillT will go check it out- he had a hand in setting up the museum and getting helo's onboard. See you in '08, Intrepid!

***UPDATE***
They were only able to move the Intrepid about 15 feet before she got stuck in the mud. The move has been scrapped for now, pending further review of wotintheHELKarewegonnadonow. *sigh* The next high tide isn't until Dec. 6, but it's lower than today's high tide.

5. Those Jarhead Grunts have pulled ahead in the Valour-IT competition- but only by about $2,000. Come on now, Soldier Supporters!!! Let's see come green!

I don't want to go home tonight

My house... is too empty.

I just don't want to go home.

Spc. Kyle Griffin's Dad Speaks Out

Spc. Kyle Griffin was killed in Iraq, along with two other Soldiers, on May 30, 2003. His dad, Ronald Griffin, has something to say about "Jon Carrey"...

I missed the joke. You must forgive me, for there just is not a lot of room in my life for even good jokes--and there is absolutely no room for "botched jokes"--when the subject of the joke is my son who was killed in Iraq. I know exactly what came out of Sen. John Kerry's mouth, and in those words there is no interpretation required. His attempt to convince us--and, I believe, to convince himself that that there was really a botched joke buried deep within his insult is in fact a reaffirmation of his ever-present condescending nature. He actually believes that we are stupid enough to agree with him and start laughing simply because he said it was a joke. Mr. Kerry said exactly what he meant and meant exactly what he said. In those words Mr. Kerry did in fact wash completely away the facade of his support of our magnificent troops and revealed for all to see his true colors.

All one had to do is look into the face of Mr. Kerry as the last word came out of his mouth, and it was painfully obvious that he knew that he had just disparaged the entire military. As the firestorm grew, the calls for an apology filled me with unease. It is not up to him to determine if an apology is in order. That decision most certainly rests with the millions of individuals he offended, and then they would decide if they were going to accept one or not.

*****

John Kerry stands alone, to be judged by his words. He has given us the rare opportunity to look into the soul of a politician, and he has shown himself wanting, especially in view of the fact that he asked us to allow him the honor and privilege of leading our gallant military at a time of war. It is rare in life to be able to know the consequences of both sides of a decision. Mr. Kerry has clearly demonstrated what manner of president he would have been. Fortunately the American electorate denied him that high honor.

Oorah, Mr. Griffin. Oorah.

(h/t to SK. thanks darlin!)

Tickle Test!

No, I'm not ticklish. Well... not where any of you will ever find out. *ahem*

So. Anyway.
I took this inkblot test today, and found out that I'm driven by Curiosity.

This means you are full of questions about life, people, and the potential of your future. You spend more time than others envisioning the possibilities of your life — things that others are too afraid to consider.

Your curiosity burns with an almost physical need to know and do more. It's only through new experiences that you feel a greater understanding of yourself or the world — which ultimately is the greatest way for you to feel satisfied.

It is possible that the underlying reason for your drive towards curiosity is a deeply rooted fear of boredom. That means that you are probably more susceptible than others to feel like you're falling into a rut when life slows down into a comfortable routine.

You need to make sure you have stimulation in your life — that makes you feel like you're innovating or being exposed to the ideas and experiences that truly inspire you.

With such a strong orientation towards curiosity, you're also prone to a rebellious quality that shows up when you feel you are just going through the motions, and are unable to really influence the world around you. But interestingly enough, your drive towards novel experiences also indicates an openness others don't have, but wish they did.

Unconsciously, your curiosity presses you to learn more, experience more, and get the most out of life.

Though your unconscious mind is driven most strongly by Curiosity, there is much more to who you are at your core.

Heh.
Curiosity killed the cat, you know. Poor Were-Kitten.

Aligning Myself with Cassandra

I don't always read Villainous Company, but I do read it quite often. Whenever Cass gets on a rant about something, I usually find myself on the same side. Her rant about Kerry's latest blunder was spot-on, and the first I read that day. She's written so many in-depth emotional posts, I couldn't even begin to list a "top 10" because they're all "top 10" material.

She's mad as hell at the NYT. And so am I.

Prior to formal notification of next-of-kin, the New York Times ran a story about a young Corpsman, Petty Officer Third Class Dustin E. Kirby, who had just tried to save the life of Lance Cpl. Colin Smith. The picture displayed prominently in the article is Kirby's blood-soaked hand, holding the armor-piercing round that killed Smith.

Yep. That's right- the NYT ran the article, including the bloody hand picture, PRIOR to n-o-k notification. To quote Chuck, PUSSNUTS. The article goes on to explain how a pig was mortally wounded during Kirby's Corpsman training. Oh, I just can't WAIT until PETA gets ahold of that. They use a live animal to train our Corpsmen how to handle mortal wounds- and the emotions associated with the loss of the patient. It's meant to help them deal with human pain and death on the battlefield. I'm not normally an advocate for animal testing, but I do see the value in this training.

I am, once again, sickened by the lack of decor displayed by the media. I keep reading newspapers and watching the nightly news, hoping against all hope that some day they will "get it", and not be the haters they have become. Yes, I understand that "bad news sells", but there are ways to present the GWOT and our military in a not-so-negative light. War is hell, and I don't need to be sheltered from it... but I also don't need to hear that war is hell AND it's unnecessary when I know, deep in my heart, that it IS necessary from time to time.

The GWOT is a necessary war. It is not in vain- unless we elect anti-war, anti-military officials like Murtha, Kerry, Kennedy, and so many others who want us to pull our troops out of Iraq immediately. Yes, some are war veterans, but that does NOT make them pro-military by proxy. That's a right you EARN by what you say, what you do, and how you live your life. Murtha has proved to us all that there *is* such a thing as an EX-Marine.

I am so tired of politicians standing up and shouting "I support our troops- but NOT THIS WAR OR THEIR MISSION". FUCK THAT. The war AND the mission are warranted, and we ARE winning. We will continue to win unless the asshats in Washington decide to cut and run before the job is done. If that happens, they have effectively discounted the thousands of dead and injured GWOT soldiers.

I won't let that happen.
I won't let our soldiers be treated as baby-killers like the VN vets were. I won't let them be treated as "stupid" or "angry, non-discriminatory murderers". I just won't put up with it, or any politician with that attitude. It pains me to know that some Americans not only put up with it, but support their batshit crazy ideas.

We support our troops by showing them respect- for the living, AND the dead. The NYT's just doesn't get it. Not by a longshot.

ARMY STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

*does happy dance*
We're Number 1! We're Number 1!

But, of course it doesn't really matter which branch wins the competition. This is for our wounded warriors! Come on people!!! $10.00 is all I ask. LET'S DO IT!!

Pussnuts

OMG..
Chuck, you ROCK!
You have *GOT* to read Z's rant against John Kerry's "stuck in Iraq" comment. Here's a clip:

"... I'm educated. I can fully and completely express myself without cursing like a drunken sailor with tourettes. But it's just too much fun sometimes.

John Pussnuts Kerry is a complete and total fuckstick. He is a jackass, and asshat, and a meatsicle. The best part of him didn't run down the crack of his mother's ass, it dribbled off his dog's chin.

I wouldn't piss on Pussnuts if he was on fire. And that is coming from someone who has *been* on fire..."

Pussnuts. CLASSIC.
